Peanut Butter: A Love Story

I have a growing love/addiction -call it what you will- for peanut butter, extra-crunchy. More specifically, the crunchy East Wind peanut butter from the bulk section of the East Lansing Food Co-op in East Lansing, Michigan.

Peanut butter sandwiches never fail to satisfy all of my lunchtime cravings.

I’ve been busy making peanut butter & banana sammiches, peanut butter & honey sammiches, peanut butter & jam/jelly/preserves sammiches, peanut butter & onion sammiches, peanut butter & Annie’s cheddar bunny cracker sammiches…

I am ready for more peanut butter combinations!!!

A quick search online brought up some interesting peanut butter recipes and unexpected stories. I had no idea about the peanut butter sandwich contest in New York last year with a price of $25,000 smackaroos…check out the story and winning recipe here.

William I. Lengeman III wrote an article called, “Beyond Jelly: Reinventing the Peanut Butter Sandwich” which contains some interesting peanut butter facts and history as well as some interesting peanut butter combinations!

I didn’t see a simple peanut butter and onion sandwich (a favorite of Hemingway and my significant other) on Lengemann’s list (I did see a peanut butter, bacon and onion combo), but who can possibly cover all peanut butter combinations, both simple and complex? I think attempting to cover all of the possible combinations of peanut butter would be equivalent to the attempts of Pvt. Benjamin Buford ‘Bubba’ Blue on Forrest Gump to describe all the ways to make shrimp. Nigh impossible.

Let me know your favorite peanut butter combination! I’d love to hear : )

  1. don’t shudder until you try it…..peanut butter, crunchy or smooth, strawberry jam, and potato chips. yes, together! pile those chips on your sammie and give it all a good smoosh together. it’s like going to heaven! lol

Hmm, that actually sounds pretty good! When I first read “don’t shudder until you try it,” my first inclination was to shudder, but I made it through : )

      Thanks for the tip!

  3. I guess I’m not that creative with PB. My favorite is good ol’ PB cookies. I also like a good peanut sauce (usually thai or other asian-inspired) on a pasta dish.

Mmm! Both of those peanut butter combinations sound absolutely delicious!!! & definitely creative enough for me! Thank you for sharing!

as variations on pb & onion:
    & arugula
    or Kale
    or green pepper
    or spinach
all good and good for you
